*SS109 was the NATO standard round developed by Fabrique Nationale in the late 1970s, soon replacing the US Army's weaker M193 ball round. The new second generation SS109 rounds are filled with reduced-smoke or smokeless powder and have a tungsten-composite or copper-alloy bullet. Sometimes it comes in an aluminum casing and a better bullet finish. Fabrique Nationale remains the biggest manufacturer of it today.

Call of Pripyat in-game description

5.56x45mm SS109 is a NATO semi-armor-piercing rifle ammunition featured in the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series.

Usage

This kind of ammo is used by the TRs 301, IL 86, SGI 5k, GP37 and the FT-200M. In S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat, the player can modify the AKM-74/2 to fire this caliber instead.

Appearance

Shadow of Chernobyl

In Shadow of Chernobyl this type of ammo can be found and bought by the player, in similar ways to other ammo, after visiting the bar. While it is very rare in the Dark Valley it will sort of replace the old 5.45x39mm ammo in regions further north, making a change to a compatible weapon beneficial, but only after completing all missions in the area. It is not found or sold further south.

They are easily found in the Wild Territory as 5.56 rifles are the standard weapons for Mercenaries and the Bandits in the area.

Clear Sky

SS109 cartridges are mostly non-existent early in the game and only become more common after the player exits the Cordon, where it is sold by most traders. It can be easily salvaged from fallen Freedom members.

Call of Pripyat

Unlike previous games, SS109 cartriges are common found in all areas, but is slightly hard to actually obtain without resorting to killing every stalker holding a 5.56x45mm firearm.

Owl sells them by default, however, unless one has done enough quests around Zaton that he'll lower his prices, he will sell a single box of SS109s at around +2000RU, which is very expensive at the start of the game.

Hawaiian also sells this type of ammo, however much like Owl's rates, unless one is friendly with Freedom or has done enough quests around Yanov, Hawaiian will sell them at very high prices.

Some boxes can be found in various stashes, such as beneath a house in the Izumrudnoye area of Zaton, and beneath a container in the Yanov northern tunnel, both found with a TRs 301.

SS109 rounds have similar performance to 5.45x39mm FMJ lead rounds, but differ in that they have a hardened steel penetrator tip. The penetrator can pierce light cover or body armor and the composite alloy slug behind it will go on through. This gives them better penetration against heavier armor, giving the player a slight edge in the late game where heavily armored stalkers are a more frequent opponent.

It is also available in 5.56x45mm AP.
