Everything that you said about Monolith is right - it's just an illusion created by a laboratory near the Sarcophagus...judging by everything, it's the only way to penetrate to the real secret of the Zone...Which you were always trying to figure out.
― Doc

Doctor (Ru. Доктор), also referred to simply as Doc, is a legendary stalker who appears in S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl. He is also mentioned in S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky and S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat.

Background[]

One of Strelok's companions and a member of his group, Doc has been acquainted with Strelok for at least two years.[non-game. 1] Unlike his companions, he rarely ever makes uses of weapons, but specializes in medicine and is also known to have supplied the group with medicine for their trips to the center of the Zone.[quote. 1] True to his name, Doctor is very proficient with medicine, as he is known to have helped Strelok make a full recovery after being severely injured during one of his trips to the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. In spite of this, Doc is wary of the group's attempts to reach the center of the Zone, warning Strelok that this might cost his life eventually.

No one but his friends knows where he lives, but he is rumored to live somewhere deep in the Swamps. According to a legend, Doctor once managed to reach the Wish Granter and made the wish to receive the ability to help every creature, although in return, he lost the ability to distinguish humans from mutants.[quote. 2] This rumor is eventually proven to be false by Doctor himself during the events of Shadow of Chernobyl, who states that no one has ever reached the Wish Granter and managed to return alive. He is also accompanied by a tamed mutant dog, one of two characters alongside Noah who are known for being able to successfully tame mutants.

Before the events of the games, he is known to have taken care of Strelok twice, once when he was injured in a shootout with the Monolith at the Chernobyl NPP, and another when he was injured by an emission.

During S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl, Doctor reveals his name is Dr. Kaymanov, who was supposed to occupy the first pod of 8 pods.

Appearances[]

Shadow of Chernobyl[]

Doctor is first seen during a cutscene after the player deactivates the Miracle Machine inside Lab X-16. Doctor is seen warning Strelok that his trips to the Chernobyl NPP will end up killing him. Later on, Strelok returns to the Doctor, severely injured. Doc treats the wounded Strelok and learns upon his departure that he is planning for another trip to the center of the Zone, refusing to heed Doc's previous warnings. Doctor reluctantly gives him medical supplies for the trip.

Later on, after searching Ghost's body inside X-16 and Strelok's hideout in the Agroprom Underground, the Marked One learns that Ghost was due to meet with Doctor in search for Strelok. He gets a clue about Doctor's location from Guide, who informs him that he will be found in Strelok's hideout. The Marked One goes to the hideout but is caught by a booby trap. There, the Marked One meets Doctor who informs him that he is Strelok, and that the Wish Granter is indeed a fly trap; he asks Strelok to investigate, providing him with a key to a hideout inside the Hotel in Pripyat which contains the decoder necessary to gain access to the laboratory inside the Sarcophagus.

If the player chooses to join the C-Consciousness, Doctor is briefly seen in the final cutscene, remarking that he hasn't seen Strelok in a while and wondering where he might have gone.

Clear Sky[]

Doctor does not appear in the game but is mentioned twice, once in dialogue with Zvyagintsev and the other in the audio log found in the Agroprom Underground hideout.

Call of Pripyat[]

Doctor is briefly mentioned in the note to Ghost which can be found in Jupiter.

Heart of Chornobyl[]

Doctor returns, where he is revealed to be Dr. Kaymanov, one of the eight original researchers on the Noosphere, seven of whom eventually formed the Common Consciousness. He grew disillusioned and skeptical with the research as it went on, and saw his colleagues' idea of "removing darkness from humanity" as highly dubious as well as effectively stripping people of free will. Because of this, he refused to enter the eight pod during the 2006 experiment, then attempted to sabotage it once it began.

He lives in a cabin in the Red Forest where he has a reputation of helping anyone, be it human or mutant.

If the player sides with neither Ward nor Spark they will be ordered by Strelok to kill Dr. Kaymanov. Even if player refuses he is presumed dead to an Emission after deliberately refusing to seek shelter, although his body is never found.

Dialogue[]

Quote Condition

If this is so important, why didn't you explain what you were going there for? And where did... where did you get this photo from?

X-16 cutscene

One day you'll finish badly, Strelok.

Hold on, son. You're going to make it.

Where will you go now?

Strelok! Hey, Strelok! Strelok, c'mon, man, wake up! Ah, 'tis better. You had me worried. What the hell are you doing, man? Have you lost your memory or something? You were the one who suggested that we take this precaution. Oh, well, at least you're... At least you're still alive.Look, Strelok, we've got no time so I need you to listen to me. Everything you've said about the Monolith is true. All of it! It is just an illusion manufactured in a lab next to the Sarcophagus. And nobody... Nobody who've reached the Monolith has ever come back. It looks like they've died there. But anyway... While you were away, I dug up some more info. And, basically, there's a decoder to open the door which leads to the Monolith controls. And this decoder is hidden in a stash in Pripyat. Now I'm going to give you the coordinates of this stash, and I'm giving you the key to open it. I want you to take the decoder, and I want you to find the door in the Sarcophagus. And then you... Well, you'll know what to do. But it seems that this is the only way of uncovering the Zone's real secret. This is the one you've been trying to work out, Strelok! All right, that is all for now. It is time for us to split. I'm going to need to lay low for a while. But I'll be waiting for you, Strelok. Good luck, my friend!

Agroprom Underground cutscene

I haven't seen Strelok in a long time. Is he dead already? Although he's hardy as a cat... He should be OK I think. Oh, well... Well, let's leave this place, pal. Let's have some dinner. I know that you're more interested in that than our old friend.

Ending cutscene (join the C-Consciousness)

Development[]

{{{px This article or section is based on S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl cut content and may contain inaccurate information or speculation.

In earlier versions of the story, the Marked One was meant to encounter Doctor in the Dead City after being captured by mercenaries. There, the player would learn about the Marked One's true identity from Doctor in dialogue, who would also give him the key to the Hotel hideout and tell him about the Wish Granter. Doctor would then give the player more information about the city, its layout and the mercenaries in it. In the final version of the game, the level was scrapped and the encounter cutscene was moved to the Agroprom Underground hideout.

One can still find a string table containing most of the dialogue related to this cut segment of the story in the assets of the game.[non-game. 2]

Glitches[]

  • If the player quicksaves and quickloads during the cutscene where they talk to Doc, then upon loading the quicksave, the player's controls will be restored earlier than intended, allowing one to move around during the cutscene. In this scenario, one can kill Doctor before his dialogue ends.

Well, brother, let me tell you one of the Zone's oldest legends. So, there's this Doctor. He can bring anyone back from the dead, even if they were hacked up into pieces. No one knows how he does this, but it is a known fact! I haven't seen any of these resurrected people, but I know people who have. Now for the most interesting part. They say that Doctor is one of the original stalkers. Supposedly he managed to reach the Wish Granter. And you know what he asked for? The ability to help every living creature. He was granted this gift all right, but he can no longer see the difference between humans and mutants. If I - a living creature - were to wound another living creature - a bloodsucker - Doctor would go and heal him. And vice versa. Oh, and Doctor is almost impossible to find, most of the time he shows up by himself. When he doesn't, he comes with a tame Chernobyl dog. Those who have seen them say it's quite a sight."
