The G36 model in the series is a bit unusual. The barrel is abnormally short, leading some to mistakenly identify it as the sub-carbine variant, the G36c, although it is probably modeled after the G36K. The gun in the game is really the G36 as the G36 has a barrel length of 19in but look short since most of the barrel is concealed. You can conclude the game model is a full-size G36 or a G36K rather than a G36c from the hand guard, which has six vent holes (the G36c's handguard is shorter and has only two vent holes) and the lack of a Picatinny rail .

The Heckler & Koch G36 (named 'GP-37' in-game) is a 5.56mm assault rifle, designed in the early 1990s by German firearms manufacturer Heckler & Koch, featured in S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl, S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky, and S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat. The G36 chambers by default NATO Standard 5.56x45mm ammunition of varying types. The G36 is considered to be the successor of the G3 and is standard issue to the German Bundeswehr and the Spanish armed forces aswell as being a fine example of modern assault rifles. It is worth noting that NATO STANAG magazines cannot be used on G36 series rifles.

General characteristics

By default, the weapon weighs 3.6 kg. (unloaded) and features a 30-round magazine. Unlike other assault rifles (aside from the FN F2000), the G36 features an integrated scope with 1.8x magnification instead of iron sights, allowing it to fill in for assault and sniper roles with excellent efficiency. The weapon comes in with only 2 firing modes: single shot and full auto. The optical sight reticle pattern is identical with the FN F2000 reticle pattern. The weapon cannot be mounted with a grenade launcher by default, and also cannot use a silencer by default, except for in S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky.

Overall it is one of the best rifles that may be found in the Zone, sometimes used by faction experts.

Appearances

Shadow of Chernobyl

Characteristics

It has above-average accuracy, and has medium to low recoil, making its scope very useful. The weapon can mount neither a silencer nor the M203 Grenade Launcher.

Notable deployments

The G36 is commonly used by Freedom and Monolith experts based in the Army Warehouses, Red Forest, Pripyat and on the outskirts of the Chernobyl NPP. Most notably:

  • It's predominant primary weapon amongst Freedomers located in the Freedom HQ.
  • Used by Freedom forces stationed at the barrier in Army Warehouses area.
  • Exclusive primary weapon of Expert Monolithians located on the northern outskirts of Chernobyl NPP.
  • It can be founded at Freedom barrier puted at one of the cars

Acquiring the weapon

It is sold by Skinflint for 18,000 Ru once the player has attained a good reputation with Freedom. Several stashes contain this weapon, the player can acquire the coordinates of one such stash from the body of Skull.

The price went up with patch 1.0005 to 135 000 , its cheaper in the one hundred rads bar , only 72 000 roubles , ...

Clear Sky

Characteristics

The G36 is one of the very best weapons; it can be upgraded to have a faster rate of fire than any other weapon, and lower recoil than most. If modified for sniping, the G36 is by far the best assault rifle converted for sniper use due to its already superior accuracy and its custom scope. The player can add an M203 grenade launcher to it if one modifies it for assault purposes. It can be also mounted with a silencer by default. Unlike most of the NATO rifles, it cannot be modified to fire 5.45 and only uses the less common 5.56 ammunition.

Notable deployments

The G36 is not used by any character.

Acquiring the weapon

There are only two ways to obtain it:

  1. Accept a side mission in the Army Warehouses which requires the player to return a Flame artifact to either a Freedom member, a Duty member, a Mercenary, or a Loner. In exchange for the Flame, the player are given a G36 and 120 5.56 x 45mm AP rounds.
  2. The other way to obtain this rifle is much more difficult. Player must join the Bandit faction and finish their campaign, which means you must secure the Garbage and then the northern parts of the Cordon. After eliminating the Loner base, the G36 is a reward, along with a rare Bulldog 6.

Upgrades

The gun can be upgraded to three tiers, but only the Clear Sky technician Grey can fully upgrade this weapon. Limpid and Yar are the only other technicians that can upgrade the G36, but they cannot fully upgrade it, although Yar can install the final accuracy upgrade for it.

Call of Pripyat

Characteristics

In Call of Pripyat, it is one of the best rifles in the game once upgraded; being incredibly accurate, durable, having a very low recoil (with appropriate upgrades) and being relatively cheap, with a common ammunition. It arguably becomes the best NATO rifle in the game once Tier 3 upgrades are available to the player, as it can be upgraded to have 100% accuracy with no sacrifice in rate of fire - a feat only matched by the Vintar BC and SVD. Add to it the high durability and minimal recoil, along with the ability to attach a silencer, and the G36 is easily one of the best weapons in the entire game, only bested by the FN F2000, Strelok's SGI-5k and the unique Fraiser.

The scope can be modified for either close-range combat, high-contrast sighting, NVG, or adjustable magnification.

Acquiring the weapon

Unfortunately it is also rare to find in random NPCs' possession in the beginning of the game, but eventually they can be procured from Black and sometimes Skull, or bought from Hawaiian after achieving very good relations with Freedom. You may also acquire this weapon if you order an assault rifle from Nimble. Can sometimes be found laying around or inside a box in particularily well-hidden areas.

Kremen also carries this gun, and he might die during the skirmish for the Duty warehouse, if you give Morgan's PDA to Freedom. Sometimes a member of a randomly spawned Freedom squad carries this weapon, and is killed off either by mutants or a Duty squad.

A rarely spawned Loner in Zaton may also carry this gun. He and his squad can be found far south east of the Waste Processing Station in the "corner" of Zaton area.

It may also be acquired by assaulting the Scientist camp in Yanov ( One of the mercenaries wearing the exoskeleton armor carries the gun).

The scientists will block the bunker after the attack for a while, but will eventually open up for stalkers and also give you a side misson to find guards for them.

Notable deployments

Later on in the game, most Loners who wear SEVA Suits use this gun (or the VSS Vintorez), but one of these Loners appears early in the game. Many Freedom members who wear Guardian of Freedom Suits use this weapon.
