The M203 is a weapon attachment available in S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl, S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky and S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat.
Overview[]
The M203 is one of the two grenade launchers appearing in the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series alongside its Warsaw Pact counterpart, the GP-25 Koster. It is a very lethal weapon that launches grenades at a long distance, much longer than a standard thrown grenade and with a little practice, one can use it as a bombardment weapon to rain pain on unsuspecting enemies whilst being relatively safe. As with other explosive weapons, caution must be exercised when using this weapon as the weapon can damage its own user if fired too close, therefore making it very risky to use in close-quarters combat.
Compatible Weapons[]
Shadow of Chernobyl:
Clear Sky:
Call of Pripyat:
Appearances[]
The weapon is found in all three S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games albeit uncommon.
Shadow of Chernobyl[]
A grenade launcher for the SGI 5k, the TRs 301, the GP 37 and the IL 86.
― In-game description
In Shadow of Chernobyl, the M203 can be equipped on the SGI-5k and the TRs 301 and any of their variants. Despite what the description claims, it cannot be equipped on the GP37 and the IL 86.
Acquisition[]
Barkeep awards the player with a TRs 301, plus every compatible accessory, namely M203, silencer and SUSAT scope after completing the mission Find artifact Goldfish. Note that this mission will only be offered after the Brain Scorcher has been disabled and all of Barkeep's 'artifact retrieval' missions have been completed. Lukash awards the player with a SGI 5k and an M203, M209 grenades, as well as 5.56 x 45mm AP ammo, after clearing the village for Freedom.
One can be found in a stash in the Wild Territory - Secret stash in the garage. The stash info can be acquired from dead stalkers in the Wild Territory, Army Warehouses, or Yantar, regardless of their faction.
Freedom's armory also contains a TRs 301 with the grenade launcher mounted to it, a second TRs 301 has a SUSAT scope.
Clear Sky[]
An under-barrel grenade launcher for NATO rifles. Uses M209 ammo.
― In-game description
In Clear Sky, the TRs 301, SGI-5k, GP37 and IL 86 can all equip the weapon although they need a specific upgrade beforehand.
Acquisition[]
The M203 is available from Tooth as long as the Bandits control the Garbage, and Ashot after completing the mission Deliver the ammo to the outpost.
Call of Pripyat[]
A modified M203 grenade launcher that has been shortened by three inches, attached to weapons by means of a Picatinny Rail. Thanks to a changed mount, this grenade launcher is widely used around the world.
― In-game description
In Call of Pripyat, only the TRs 301 and SGI-5k (including Strelok's) can equip the weapon.
Acquisition[]
The M203 can be purchased from Owl after obtaining either the achievement Boss or One of Ours (a little more frequently in the latter case). It is also frequently sold by Hawaiian after obtaining the achievement A Friend of Freedom, obtaining the achievement A Wealthy Client will make it guaranteed to appear in his wares.
One can be acquired fairly early in the game by taking one from a damaged truck standing behind the Waste Processing Station in Zaton, along with two M209 grenades.
Trivia[]
- Although the weapon is referred to as M203, the launcher is not actually based on the M203 grenade launcher but on the SIG GL 5040, a Swiss-made grenade launcher which can be mounted on the SIG SG 550 (the SGI-5k's real-life counterpart).
- In Shadow of Chernobyl, when sprinting in first-person view with either a IL 86 or a GP37, one can see a M203 attached to the weapon even though neither weapon can equip this attachment. It will automatically disappear once the player stops running.
- In Shadow of Chernobyl, the launcher's mount is the wrong way around in third person view, but is correctly positioned when mounted on a weapon. This was corrected in Clear Sky and Call of Pripyat.
- In multiplayer, it can be mounted on all NATO weapons (minus the FT-200M as it has an integrated grenade launcher).
- If the player fires a grenade at point blank range, the shell explodes. This would be unrealistic as grenade shells do not detonate at point blank-range in real life, as a shell needs about 10 meters for it to be armed.
