Military Stalkers are a specialised unit of the Ukrainian military utilised to conduct clandestine operations within The Zone. They appear in S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl, S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky and S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat.

Overview[]

Soldiers who underwent special training following their service in the Zone or stalkers who voluntarily signed a contract with the Army. Usually equipped with various support gear and well-armed. Used mainly to study the causes and effects of the catastrophe and to map out the Zone. They can work on their own or in small detachments of up to five people. Military stalkers do not allow normal stalkers to approach and open fire on sight.
― Encyclopedia, Shadow of Chernobyl S.T.A.L.K.E.R

Typically working alone or in small groups of up to five team members, military stalkers are typically Zone veterans contracted by the military for special operations.

History[]

2011[]

In 2011, the military made a second attempt to go deep into the Zone, this time with the goal of destroying it or at least extracting information about what exactly was going on in the Center of the Zone. Military stalkers led the operation, which involved many army units, including special forces. For unnamed reasons, the operation failed, and the few survivors settled in the Zone without any further evacuation.

Stalkers already know about military stalkers during the events of S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky. F.e., Ashot mentions them in a dialog[quote 1]. Presumably, a squad of military stalkers situated in a military base in the Army Warehouses after the Great Emission, but they were later knocked out by Scar. It is also likely that several military stalkers took part in holding the house on the hill in Limansk, where a machine gun point was set up and later destroyed.

2012[]

When the Brain Scorcher was disabled, military stalkers were presumably sent to the Center of the Zone with other military units. Operation Monolith was launched. A radiochemical reconnaissance team with probably military stalkers was shot down and landed in Pripyat, where it was attacked by groups of fanatics[quote 2]. A convoy, Vasil Luckless was a part of, was sent to Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant itself, but it was destroyed. Later on, squads, presumably commanded by military stalkers, began to pour in, trying to capture the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant at any cost, but encountered fierce resistance from the numerous and heavily armed Monolith fighters, suffering heavy losses. Operation Monolith failed due to poor preparation (it was spontaneous), high enemy numerical superiority, and a sudden emission. There is no information about survivors, but if there's any, there's a lot of them.

By the time S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat action begins, the mention of military stalkers completely disappears. At the same time in the Stingray squad, there are soldiers in Bulat armoured suit, whose special role is not shown in any way.

Equipment[]

Military stalkers are either former stalkers contracted by the military, or actual active members of the military with extensive experience in the Zone. As such, they are valuable assets in the field, possessing extensive knowledge about artifacts, anomalies, and the Zone itself. For this reason Military Stalkers are given the best equipment that the Military has to offer. They often wear high-end SKAT-9M Military Armored Suits and Sphere-12M Helmets, protective gear suited to combat in highly anomalous areas. The helmet of such armored suits has a thin wire mesh built into it. Military Stalkers also utilize high-end Soviet and Russian weaponry, such as the SA Avalanche and Tunder S14 assault rifles. In addition to high-end firearms they have been known to use F1 Grenades, allowing them to engage enemies at a distance with deadly force.

Armaments[]

Armor[]

  • Skat-9M military armoured suit: High-end armored suit designed specifically for use in the Zone. Features a PSZ-12p bulletproof vest, a built in compensation suit, and a Sphere-12M Helmet. Bullet/shrapnel protection is equal to that of the PSZ-12D Duty Armor and second only to the Exoskeleton. Protection from radiation and anomalies is above average. While this is the newest variant of the suit, it appears that it was only issued to the battalion that was present in Shadow of Chernobyl as it is not present anywhere else.
  • Skat-9 military armoured suit: Also known as the "Bulat" armored suit and the current armor of Military stalkers at large. While older than the SKAT-9M, the suit still retains a high amount of protection and durability comparable to its successor.

Appearances[]

Military Stalkers are only deployed in areas considered too hazardous for regular Military forces, and thus are not encountered until the later stages of the games.

Clear Sky[]

During the course of Clear Sky's campaign, a small detachment of Military stalkers, along with the remnants of a Spetsnaz team was stranded in the Army warehouses. Another Military stalker was deployed into Limansk, leading a large squad of Spetsnaz operators.

Shadow of Chernobyl[]

Large units of Military Stalkers are deployed into Pripyat and the Chernobyl NPP area after Strelok disables the Brain Scorcher. At the Chernobyl NPP, they are supported by Mi-24 Hind Gunships and BTR-70 Armoured Personnel Carriers. Some Military Stalkers will appear at Cordon when you have deactivated the Brain Scorcher.

Call of Pripyat[]

The protagonist of Call of Pripyat, Major Degtyarev, is in practice a Military Stalker. Other, better equipped Military Stalkers later appear in Pripyat alongside conventional Spetsnaz as part of Colonel Kovalsky's rag-tag group of Military survivors, and the Quartermaster can hand the Major a typical Military Stalker uniform. Despite being significantly more experienced than the Grunts and even Spetsnaz they landed with, however, most are inevitably killed in Pripyat.
