The mounted RP-74 was meant to be included in Shadow of Chernobyl but was cut from the final release of the game. Remnants of the weapon include its configuration file and model.

It is depicted as a RP-74 mounted on a tripod. The weapon appeared in several pre-release builds, where it is usable by the player.

Clear Sky[]

The Mounted Weapon was properly introduced in Clear Sky. It appears as a simple RP-74 without its tripod, as the weapon in-game is mounted on railings. Unlike its previous iteration, the Mounted Weapon cannot be operated by the player and is available to specific NPCs only. In addition, it is coded to only fire at the player and will do so as long as they are within its line of fire and operating range, regardless of whether the player is directly visible to the operator or not.

Compared to the standard RP-74, the weapon has its fire rate increased by 50% but its damage reduced by 40%. The turret is extremely lethal and can easily kill a player with full health very quickly; this is made worse by the 7.62x54mm 7N1's penetrating capabilities, which make the turret not only lethal against armored players, but also capable of injuring them through obstacles, making the use of thick cover mandatory to survive.

All mounted RP-74s in Clear Sky can be rendered inactive by killing their operator, although it is usually a temporary method as other NPCs may start operating the weapon again if this was done. In addition, it can be tricky to kill the machine gunner, as he is usually well protected.

Locations[]

Only three mounted RP-74s appear in the game:

  • The first one can be found at the northwestern corner of the watchtower at the Military checkpoint in the Cordon. It can be operated by any soldier in the checkpoint. This machine gun most notably appears as the player's first obstacle upon entering the Cordon for the first time, as they will directly find themselves in its sight and they must escape from it safely to go to the Rookie Village.
  • The two other turrets are encountered in the Deserted hospital, where they are operated by Monolith fighters.

Trivia[]

  • The Mounted Weapon also appears in the game files of Call of Pripyat, however the file is almost identical to its Clear Sky version, so it is most likely a leftover.
  • In all three games, the configuration file has two sections (mounted_weapon and stationary_mgun), though only the latter is used in-game. Both sections are identical in most points, save for a few absent configurations in the former.
