Operation Fairway was a Military operation aimed at taking control of Pripyat and the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. Its failure is the focal point of S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat.
Background[]
With the deactivation of the Brain Scorcher and the failure of Operation Monolith at the end of S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl, a plan was devised to initiate a full-scale invasion of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant which was reportedly still under the control of the Monolith.
Lessons learned from the failure of Operation Monolith enabled the Ukrainian military to develop anti-emission protection systems for use on their Mi-24 helicopters. Using maps of anomaly fields taken by thorough scans of the Zone, a vanguard consisting of five state-of-the-art attack helicopters each carrying a crew of Spetsnaz operators was dispatched to establish a foothold within Chernobyl to prepare for the arrival of the main attack force.
At the onset of the game, all five helicopters do not return and are widely believed to have crashed. Major Alexander Degtyarev, an experienced Stalker, is assigned by the USS to investigate the causes for the failure of Operation Fairway.
By investigating the remains of the helicopters, Major Degtyarev quickly determines that the survivors have headed for evacuation point B28 in the city of Pripyat, where he links up with the commander of the operation, Colonel Kovalsky and the remainder of his men. After learning from Strelok that the helicopters crashed because of airborne anomalies that changed locations after the emission that preceded the start of the operation, the survivors and Strelok are evacuated by the military at Pripyat's Prometheus Movie Theater.
Personnel[]
The vanguard was commanded on the ground by Colonel Kovalsky and was comprised of around 40 to 60 men, including the helicopter pilots. By the time the Major arrives in Pripyat, the vast majority of them are confirmed killed-in-action and the survivors are holding out inside a fortified laundromat.
