Operation Monolith was an attempt by the Ukrainian Military to take over the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, initiated after the shutdown of the Brain Scorcher. It plays a minor role in the events of S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl.
Background[]
During the history of the Zone, several attempts were made by the Ukrainian government to capture the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. One such attempt was led by then Captain Tachenko, which ended in failure when the squad suffered from casualties and the survivors arranged a communications breakdown, which would lead to the creation of the faction Duty. Further attempts were made near-impossible by the emergence of the Brain Scorcher, a powerful psi-emitter located in the Red Forest which cut off almost all routes to Chernobyl.
Some time in the summer of 2012, a stalker known as Strelok made his way into the Red Forest with the help of a prototype Psi-helmet and deactivated the Brain Scorcher, opening new routes to Pripyat and the Chernobyl power plant. Immediately in response, the Military launched a large-scale airborne operation into the center of the Zone, in order to capture the plant from the Monolith faction.

Chronology[]
Red Forest[]
Immediately after the deactivation of the Brain Scorcher, a Spetsnaz team was deployed at the Scorcher. They encountered minimal resistance, as most of the Monolith stalkers guarding the complex had been taken out by Strelok beforehand. A smaller detachment was also deployed to secure the checkpoint that connects the Red Forest to the Army Warehouses.
Pripyat[]
A Mi-24 was shot down over Pripyat by Monolith forces within the city. According to radio communications heard in-game, the helicopter was on a CBRN reconnaissance flight when it was downed. The helicopter crashed just by the «Avtovokzal» bus station, leaving only four survivors. The soldiers will try to fight their way to the Stadium, most likely to link up with the attacking forces in Chernobyl, although they are very likely to get killed by the numerous Monolith forces scattered throughout Pripyat.
Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant[]
Most of the fighting took place in the vicinity of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, held by Monolith forces. Under the command of their field commander, callsign Quartet, military forces supported by multiple Mi-24s and BTR-70s assaulted the plant. In response, the Monolith faction deployed numerous heavily-equipped ground troops, supported by marksmen using Gauss guns and RPG-7us.
Shortly after the start of the battle, an Emission began to occur. Despite Quartet's orders for the forces to seek shelter, most of them were annihilated in the resulting emission, resulting in the failure of the operation.
Aftermath[]
The Military sustained heavy losses as a result of the emission, with most of the men and equipment involved in the operation lost. The Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant remained into the hands of the Monolith faction, although Strelok managed to make his way into the Sarcophagus, eventually discovering the Monolith Control Center and destroying the C-Consciousness.
Shortly after the failure of Operation Monolith, a new operation known as Operation Fairway was carried out to capture the plant. This time around, the Mi-24s involved in the operation were equipped with powerful anti-emission protection systems. Despite thorough preparations, Operation Fairway resulted in yet another failure, leading to the events of S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat.

Trivia[]
- A detachment named "Lun' is mentioned on the map of the operation but not listed on the situation report. There were apparently deployed in the northern part of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. The wreckage of a Mi-24 can be observed on the rooftop of the plant and multiple abandoned APCs can be seen in the vicinity, suggesting that this may have been the detachment's fate.
- The callsigns of all airborne assault units are named after birds of prey.
- The army helicopters can be seen attacking their own men as well, most likely as a result of a developer oversight.
