The Production complex (colloquially referred to as the Factory) is a location in Yantar featured in S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl and S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky.

Overview[]

The area was considered an ideal location to construct a hidden laboratory which was masked by the factory. This became Lab X-16 which was originally designed to be a sister-lab for Lab X-18. It is not known when the X-16 lab was constructed underneath the factory.

After breakthroughs in X-18, a prototype Kaymanov emitter was set up in the lab, powered by a massive artificially grown brain, with the antenna hidden inside one of the factory buildings.

History[]

After The Zone was born in 2006, the complex fell into disrepair and was abandoned, but the emitter was still active. This has proven disastrous, as many stalkers, lured by the prospect of scavenging an intact factory, fell prey to the emitter's disastrous influence and turned into Zombified Stalkers, almost feral creatures extremely aggressive towards anyone but their own.

As such, the only inhabitants are the aforementioned husks and Snorks that roam around the complex. Scattered corpses, either fresh, decayed, or even missing body parts, are present in nearly every inch of the area. There is even a pile of Spetsnaz bodies being used as fuel for fire.

Appearances[]

Shadow of Chernobyl[]

The Production complex, especially the laboratory, plays a major role in the storyline. After recovering documents from Lab X-18, the player is sent by Barkeep to Yantar to find more documents within the X-16 facility itself.

Initially, the factory is off-limits due to the intense psi radiation in the area. The player is tasked with assisting Professor Sakharov with creating a prototype helmet to protect its wearer from the psi emissions. With the helmet in his possession, the Marked One enters the facility and finds the entrance to Lab X-16 underneath one of the buildings. After leaving X-16, the Marked One finds himself in the sewage pipes running underneath the factory, where he is confronted by more zombies, snorks and a Pseudogiant. Upon leaving the sewers, a pair of military helicopters are seen attacking the facility to eliminate zombies within the facility, before flying away.

At the start, the factory is crawling with zombies and snorks. After the emitter is shut down, the psi emissions subside and the number of zombies drastically drops, making exploration of the area significantly safer. One may also encounter a controller within the factory, whose elimination is required by General Voronin as part of a side mission - Destroy the controller at Yantar.

Clear Sky[]

In Clear Sky, the Production complex is also featured in the main story. Some time before the events of the game, the emitter's cooling system began to malfunction, causing psi emissions within Yantar to increase in amplitude and zombies to become more numerous and aggressive.

As part of the main story, Sakharov sends the player to find a PDA detailing the origin of the psi-emission spike in the area behind the complex itself. Afterwards, Scar teams up with Sakharov's associate, a stalker named Lefty, to mend the cooling system. The group infiltrates the facility and restarts the cooling pumps, while Scar provides cover fire. When the pumps are fixed, Sakharov tells Scar that Strelok has headed for the Red Forest.

Most of the location is identical to its Shadow of Chernobyl counterpart, although the entrance to Lab X-16 has removed, and a route to the Red Forest has opened near the building with the entrance to X-16. In addition, many of the static bodies are missing, as well as the BTR-70. As with Shadow of Chernobyl, penetrating the complex without completing the associated main quests can be lethal, as the psi-emissions are particularly strong, and only subside after the cooling system is repaired.
