― In-game description

The SSP-99 Ecologist protection suit is specially designed for the Zone conditions, used by Ecologists and stalkers who cooperate with them. This suit is only available in S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl.

Overview

The SSP-99 suit has an integrated air-filtering and air-conditioning system with the main body of the suit made out of materials that are heat and electricity resistant, providing near-invulnerability to radiation and anomalies. For additional protection, the suits are treated with a special substance obtained from Urchin artifacts.

It also includes a second generation night vision device. However, since this suit was designed to protect the wearer from hazardous and toxic elements it could encounter and not from firearms, it has very low protection against firearms and explosives. To mitigate this, a combat oriented variant of the suit is available to while retaining its high anomalous protection: the SSP-99M Suit.

Appearances

Shadow of Chernobyl

Sakharov will sell one after disabling the Psi-emitter in Lab X-16, but he will give one to the player for free beforehand, if the player rescues professor Kruglov.

The suit can be also found in the following stashes and places:

  • A crate located inside the X-16, near a staircase in the large emitter room
  • A stash under the cross on the right side of the road in the direction of the Army Warehouses while leaving the Bar / Rostok area .

Notes

The SSP-99 Ecologist suit is not available in either S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky or S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat. However, both games feature scattered resources pertaining to the armor, particularly the inventory icon which is present in both games, presumably indicating that it was intended for inclusion at some point during development of both games.

The suit is also a very strong reference to the special suits worn by the scientists in the novel 'Roadside Picnic', which the games are based on. The main character mentions "Stalkers'd pay a small fortune for one if it were any colour other than bright red."
