I guess my options are pretty limited...
― Scar

Scar (Шрам), is the main protagonist and player character of S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Clear Sky.

Background

Not much is mentioned about Scar's past life but he is a proficient, veteran mercenary stalker who most likely went to the zone for self-interest. Scar belongs to no faction at first and works for factions at a premium. As a freelancer, his actions are tied to his employer's wallet rather than ideals.

Scar has an unusual affinity with the zone as he was able to withstand two deadly emissions, one of them being the largest one in Zone's history. According to Clear Sky's Professor Kalancha, the emissions actually energize Scar's abilities, giving him extraordinary reflexes and strength. However, emissions will eventually burn his nervous system and if not stopped, he will die or his brain will be destroyed and will eventually turn into one of the Zombified Stalkers. This revelation drives him to hunt down Strelok, who continues to cause emissions because he had reached the center of the Zone.

Storyline

Scar is first seen during the introduction video of S.T.A.L.K.E.R Clear Sky, escorting a group of Ecologists in the Great Swamps into Agroprom. The Ecologists and Scar are then caught in the first blowout emission after many warnings (such as many mutant animals seen fleeing) wiping out the Ecologists but leaving Scar intact but barely alive, according to Lebedev he was almost torn to shreds by a pack of Pseudodogs if the Clear Sky squad had not found him.

He is then picked up by a squadron of fighters from Clear Sky and taken to their camp to recover. This is where the player takes the perspective of Scar, first off meeting Lebedev, then helping Clear Sky regaining control over the Swamps and the exits from the Renegades and then venturing further into the zone. Scar is constantly updated by Lebedev concerning issues about Strelok and ultimately the one who slowly found and prevented him from reaching the center. Scar was caught in the emission that killed most of the Clear Sky strike force in the Chernobyl NPP area, and is either killed or inducted into the ranks of the Monolith. His fate was never fully determined.

Trivia

  • Scar has striking grey-white eyes, short, white stubble and a long face
  • As seen in the introduction video, Scar's preferred weapon before he was hit by the Great blowout was most likely the Vintar BC. He also wore a trench coat in conjuction
  • The same Vintar BC, which Scar lost in the introduction video when he was hit by the Great blowout, can be picked up in the most nothern part of the Swamps (near the Great Swamp/Agroprom Research Institute entrance point), near the carriage on the railway tracks, albeit it's durabillity is absolute zero, meaning it is utterly useless unless given a (for the beginning) very expensive repair.
  • It is quite odd that the Clear Sky patrol, who rescued Scar did not bring back his Vintar BC along with him back to the base. It could be possible that he did not end up unconscious in exactly the same spot as his Vintar BC, probably dropping his weapon in panic and sprinting some distance away before being hit by the emission. Or it could simply be because the patrol did not have the time to look for his gear, mainly due to constant Renegade and Mutant attacks.
  • His loadout is seemingly similar to that of the Savior who also uses a Vintar BC and a leather jacket with a cloak, though the rescuer does not have the hood shrouding his head
  • Scar is either in his late 30s or in his early 40s as some stalkers call him an "old man". However, Sakharov describes him as a young man when calling Lefty.
  • The only stalker NOT to call him "Merc" is Leshiy
Ss aeris 01-26-10 10-20-19 (red forest)

This is the ONLY time Scar is referred to by his callsign instead of the generic "Merc"

  • Professor Kalancha claims that Scar "defies the laws of science" due to him surviving two emissions without any protection.
  • Scar was partially mentioned in Shadow of Chernobyl in one of the messages of Ghost to Strelok, Ghost described him as a "scarred hooded guy holding a Vintar waiting for them". He also wounded and later on killed Fang in this encounter. It appears that we were to kill Fang during "Clear Sky", but, however, he is said to be "dealt" by the Clear Sky members as of us never meeting or killing him in actual game. Scar was mentioned further into Call of Pripyat in a note for Ghost written by Strelok.
  • It has been speculated by the STALKER community that Charon is actually Scar who become brainwashed after Clear Sky's failed attempt to subdue Strelok, as referenced by him being the only stalker in Shadow of Chernobyl to carry a Vintar BC, which was Scar's signature weapon. However, there is no hard evidence to support this as there are no mentions of Scar being inducted into the Monolith or surviving the first place.
  • Once Scar wakes up in the Great Swamps, one will see he already has an AKM-74/2 in his inventory and it is not given by Docent Suslov, Clear Sky's trader.. It is unknown where he recieved such a weapon, as he was not seen carrying it previously.
  • Despite the fact that Scar is quite old, he is called "young man" by E. F. Kalancha and "boy" by one of a Duty and Bandit members.
