The Silencer is a weapon attachment that appears in S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl, S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky and S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat.

Overview[]

Silencers in the Zone came with a set of adapters that allowed it to be outfitted to a wide variety of calibers, meaning that the silencer could be attached to a UDP compact and then to a TRs-301 without any complications. Not all weapons can mount a silencer.

Characteristics[]

Groza with silencer

An Tunder S14 with a mounted silencer.

The silencer is an attachment that significantly reduces the equipped weapon's noise and muzzle flash, which can be used by the player to perform stealth kills and significantly reduce the risk of alerting nearby enemies of their presence.

Unlike other attachments such as scopes or grenade launchers, it is important to note that attaching a silencer often has negative effects on the weapon's overall accuracy, and more importantly on damage, although it also reduces recoil. The most noticeably affected are the NATO calibre rifles - specifically, the GP-37 and SGI 5k drop to 37 and 30 damage respectively, weaker than an unmodified AKM-74/2. Thus, the stealth comes at a steep trade-off, and spraying in hopes of scoring a headshot is heavily discouraged - if one gets into a heated gunfight, the silencer will put the player at a disadvantage due to reduced damage output.

This is due to the in game fact that the most of the gasses and force used to propel the bullet out of the muzzle are absorbed by the silencer. While this does reduce recoil as less force is exerted out, the bullet will travel considerably slower due to less force pushing it out the muzzle, where gravity starts to pull the bullet down. In the real world, maximum velocity is already achieved by the time the projectile exits the muzzle and enters the body of the silencer; silencers often actually increase muzzle velocity by a insignificant amount.

In all of the games, attaching a silencer has the following effects:

  • Damage is reduced by 20%
  • Bullet velocity is reduced by 20%
  • Accuracy is decreased by 25%
  • Recoil is decreased by 20%
  • Recoil increase after each successive shot is reduced by 10% (Clear Sky and Call of Pripyat only)

It's worth noting that weapon variants with non-detachable silencers in Shadow of Chernobyl do not suffer from these downsides.

Appearances[]

Shadow of Chernobyl[]

An effective silencer made by Zone gunsmiths. The kit includes a set of adapters for weapons of any calibre.
― In-game description

Silencers were uncommonly found in Shadow of Chernobyl. Most silencers there appeared on unique weapons and could not be removed.

Acquisition[]

The Silencer cannot be purchased from traders. One is obtained from Barkeep as a reward for the mission Find artifact Goldfish. He will also give a TRs 301, a SUSAT scope and a M203 grenade launcher.

It can be found in the following locations:

  • Army Warehouses area, south of the bloodsucker village and west of the Freedom base where the Duty squad is camped out, attached to a rifle on the top floor of a broken house. This is not a stash, just items lying around behind some crates.
  • To the southwest of the bridge checkpoint in the Cordon. In the compound consisting of three buildings, there will be two connected in an L shape on the map with a truck parked in the corner of this L. Jump on the front of this truck and then onto the top. After that one will find a roof level with the truck. Jump across to it, then up onto the slightly higher connected roof, and the player will see a little metal box to your right. Stab it with the knife, after that the player will have to go inside the building to get the silencer and some ammo, right where the box was found. The ammo that it comes with is 5.45x39mm FMJ bullets to, there is around 150 rounds.
  • In the load floor of a truck at Garbage at the truck graveyard, under a steel plate in a box.

It can be found in the following stashes:

  • Hidden safe - Found in the Dark Valley in a stash, behind the three large cisterns and the little house where you will sometimes find a wounded stalker who gives you the info on the cheap Gauss rifle. It can vary as to who has this info, most of the time from a body in the Dark Valley or from a bandit at Garbage.
  • By the three cisterns - In a stash at the Agroprom Facility, not far from he tunnel entrance there is a group of four large cisterns, in the back near the corner of the wall is a cross that has it. Note that there are a few anomalies around.
  • Metalworking inventory - At the Agroprom Base, in a stash not far from where you have to find the Military documents.
  • Chest on the roof - In a stash at a rooftop of the Agroprom Facility, you can find its location by killing or searching Loners in the Dark Valley or Garbage.

Compatibility[]

In Shadow of Chernobyl, the silencer can be equipped on the following weapons:

The following are unique weapons that come mounted with a silencer:

Clear Sky[]

An effective silencer, assembled by some of the Zone's craftsmen. Comes with a set of adapters for weapons of all calibers.
― In-game description

In Clear Sky, silencers became more common-found. They are easily procured from traders outside the Swamps.

Acquisition[]

A large number of silencers can be found in the Dark Valley as most of the Mercenaries encountered there have a silencer attached to their TRs 301.

The silencer can be purchased from Ashot, Tooth after joining the Bandits, and Docent Suslov after Clear Sky has captured the Machine yard.

Compatibility[]

Call of Pripyat[]

An effective silencer which can be modified on the go as required. The body of the silencer around the barrel contains a roll of fine brass mesh, while the front comprises a set of metal diaphragms with holes for the bullet to pass through. The set includes adaptors and sealants for most weapons. Normally used to thin out enemy ranks without drawing attention
― In-game description

Silencers are a common sight in Call of Pripyat.

Acquisition[]

The silencer is regularly sold by Owl and Hawaiian at the beginning of the game. Hawaiian will sell it more frequently after the player completes at least two mission for Freedom in Yanov. Likewise, Owl sells silencers more frequently if the player completes missions for the Bandits in Zaton.

The silencer is often found equipped on TRs 301 used by Mercenaries. Exoskeleton experts can even have silencers equipped on their pistols. Veteran Loners, Monolith and Freedom stalkers also use suppressed SIP-t M200s.

One can be found in a Monolith stash in the Jupiter Underground, in the large dome.
