Defending?[]

I found a group of blind dogs attacking a few bandits and waited for the battle to end, with the dogs winning. I walked up to them, planning to kill them and loot the bodies, but two of the dogs broke off from the rest and started staring me down, in the standard "defending" stance. The other dogs continued eating the bodies. After a bit I walked away, and when I got far enough the defending two dogs went over and joined the others.
The point of this long-winded story is to ask: Has anyone else encountered this? If so, do you know what triggers it?
