He is found at the entrance to the Garbage, being mugged by three gunmen that hold him at gunpoint for money or artifacts.Although the player is capable of saving him, it is likely that he will be killed, as he is surrounded by three enemies. It should also be noted that the "bandits" holding him at gunpoint are indeed Loners and will remain neutral to the player if he simply does not interfere until they're done with Yurik; they can be chatted up later, as they hang out with Bes and his men, their dialogue seems to be unique.
If the player wishes to save him, they should take a stealthy approach. Sneak around past the bushes on the left side and shoot the bandit holding a silenced pistol in the head. This will enable Yurik to run that way and hide behind the car, after which he and the player can kill the remaining bandits. An alternative method is to sneak around to the right, in front of the big tree that you see when you first enter Garbage, and position yourself so that you have two of the bandits lined up; you can then either try for a double-headshot, or go full-auto while sprinting toward them so you can quickly aim for the third bandit after the others are out of the way.
Alternately, the player can save Yurik without killing any of the trenchcoat-clad Loners by simply avoiding the trigger area that initiates the battle, killing the entire Bandit raiding party that attacks the Scrapyard, and then talking to Bes for mission completion. If no other NPCs have wandered into the trigger area and set off the confrontation, the "Bandits" will put away their guns and all four will peacefully leave the area. Three will join Bes' camp and the fourth (usually Yurik) will wander aimlessly, possibly even moving to another level.
If he survives the holdup shootout, he will offer to escort the player to the Scrapyard. There he'll join Bes and his men and will fight alongside the player against the raiding Bandits. If he's not killed during battle, he may wander off to the Bandit base west of the scrapyard, where he'll be surely killed if you haven't cleared the place by then. If he does survive that too, he'll end up stationed at the Train hangar with Seriy and his men.

A short bio, that was omitted from final version of S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl game describes him as follows: 
- Even though he says he is being mugged by bandits ("It's the bandits! Help!"), and the appearance of them certainly matches bandits, if one kills them and searches their bodies they are, in fact, Loners. This is probably so they appear neutral on the radar, allowing the player to walk forward without cover.
